Cache Speak

Below are some common terms, and their definitions (as defined by me), you may run across in your geocaching and outdoor adventures.  If you think of any more please feel free to contact me and I'll add them to the list.

Cache- A hidden "treasure".  The object of a geocacher's obsession.

Cache Container- A receptacle for cache contents.  Cache sizes are nano (unofficial container type), micro, small, regular, large, unknown, other, and virtual.

DNF- An acronym used by geocachers.  It stands for, "Did Not Find".

FTF- An acronym used by geocachers.  It stands for, "First To Find".

Geocache- An item hidden using the GPS coordinate system and entered in to an online database, the most prolific of which is geocaching.com.  

Geocacher- A person with geek tendencies who partakes in the pastime of geocaching.

Geocaching-  A worldwide pastime where people (geocachers) search for and hide items using a GPS receiver and the GPS coordinate system.

Geocoin- A Geocoin is an item with a unique identifying code that can be tracked on geocaching.com.   Geocoinss are in the form of a coin that can be sent out in to the world.  The Geocoin's adventures are logged by finders and people who move the item from one cache location to another.  A map of a Geocoin's movements can be viewed at geocaching.com. Travelbug is a registered trademark of geoaching.com.

GPSr- GPS receiver.  Global Positioning System Receiver.

GZ- An acronym used by geocachers.  It stands for, "Ground Zero".

Log- An online record of visitors, finders, and DNF'ers for a cache.  Also a way to communicate between geocachers and cache owners.  The items that can be logged are "Found it", "Didn't find it", "Write note", "Needs archived", and "Needs maintenance"

Logbook- A physical record residing in each geocache where each cache visitors logs the date the cache was found, his name and (if room is available) a note to the cache owner about your adventure.

Muggle- A non-geocaching type.  Someone who's not playing the game.

Pathtag- A trackable signature item that is trackable at pathtags.com.

TFTF- An acronym used by geocachers.  It stands for, "Thanks For The Find, Thanks For The Fun".

TFTC-  An acronym used by geocachers.  It stands for, "Thanks For The Cache".

SL- An acronym used by geocachers.  It stands for, "Signed Log.".

SWAG- An acronym used by geocachers.  It stands for, "Stuff We All Get".  These are items that are swapped by geocachers within caches.  If you take something leave something of equal or greater value.

TNLN- An acronym used by geocachers.  It stands for, "Took Nothing Left Nothing".

Trackable- An item with a unique identifying code that is trackable on geocaching.com.  These are usually in the form of Travelbugs, Geocoins, and Cachekinz.  Each trackable has it's own page wear the owner of the trackable posts a goal for the trackable.  Each trackable is logged at the geocaching.com website where movements are logged and tracked.  A map of a trackable's travels is also available.

Travelbug- A Travelbug is an item with a unique identifying code that can be tracked on geocaching.com.   Travelbugs are in the form of a "dog tag" that can then be attached to an item and sent out in to the world.  The Travelbug's adventures are logged by finders and people who move the item from one cache location to another.  A map of a Travelbug's movements can be viewed at geocaching.com. Travelbug is a registered trademark of geoaching.com.
